The Dallas Mavericks or “Mavs” for short have had a tail of two fortunes. from the 1980s to the early 2000s this franchise was nothing to write home about. In the 1980s and 1990s many of their star players left the franchise due to the lack of team success. That all changed in the 2000s with two NBA final appearances (both against the Miami Heat), and one NBA final championship in 2011. This has a ton to due with their eccentric owner Mark Cuban and their German superstar Dirk Nowitzki.

Dirk Nowitzki

Dirk is Dallas Mavericks basketball essentially. Dirk Nowitzki is the greatest Mavericks player of all time. Dirk led the Mavericks to their first ever NBA finals appearance and their first ever NBA finals title both against the Miami Heat.

Dirk has one an MVP award, and NBA finals MVP award, and has made the All-Star game 13 times. He is in his 21st season as a Maverick. He averaged in his career 21.2 points per game and 7.7 rebounds.

Not only is Dirk the greatest Maverick player of all time but he is recognized as the greatest German basketball player of all time and many argue the greatest European basketball player of all time as well.

Mark Aguirre

Dallas Mavericks, Mark Aguirre

Mark Aguirre was the 1st overall pick in the 1981 draft. And he was spectacular from day one. As a rookie he averaged 18.7 points per game and 4.9 rebounds. As a rookie he helped take the Mavericks from a 15 win team to a 28 win team.

And by year 3 he had helped lead the Mavericks to the playoffs for the first time in their franchise’s history.  During his Mavericks career Mark could just put the ball in the basketball.

He averaged during his 8 year Mavericks career 24.6 points per game 5.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He was selected to the All-Star game 3 times in his 8 seasons in Dallas.

Rolando Blackman could put up buckets. Rolando joined the Mavericks as a rookie in 1982 and spent 11 season in a Dallas Maverick uniform.

Blackman during his Mavericks career averaged 19.2 points per game with 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He helped lead the Mavericks to the playoffs 6 times in a 7 year span from 1983-1990.

He made the All-Star team 4 times as well. Blackman still stands as the 3rd longest tenured Maverick of all time.

Mark Cuban

Our one and only owner on the list. Mark Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000 for 285 million dollars. In the 20 years before Cuban bought the team the Mavericks won only 40% of their games and had a playoff record of 21-32.

Mark Cuban is known for being eccentric and controversial. He has been fined multiple times for being critical of the NBA officials. And a scandal rocked the Mavericks in their front office for “Animal House” like behavior.

However, if it wasn’t for Cuban the Mavericks may not have ever won a championship nor appeared in one and he is a huge part of the reason why the Mavericks franchise has been one of the most iconic franchises during the 21st century of the NBA.
