With the NFL draft now in the past, and free agent signings relatively wrapped up we are fast approaching the start of a new football season in a couple months. A lot of different moves have been made, and this is SONTLive writer Simon Villanoz evaluation of every team’s offseason as of now. A division will be evaluated every week and a team released one by one. Today we cover:
The San Francisco 49ers!
Significant Undrafted Free Agents:
Tarvarus McFadden, CB, Florida State
Technically getting Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t an offseason move so I didn’t take it into consideration. The extension they gave him was expected, and it gives the 49ers so much more stability now that they have a guy to build around. Jimmy G has to deliver now, and I personally think he won’t disappoint.
Their offseason besides giving Garoppolo that extension was definitely above average at the very least. I don’t think their moves this offseason will affect this next season, but it’s setting them up for success in future seasons.
Their next big move after signing Garoppolo was the signing of Richard Sherman. He immediately makes the 49ers a way better team and gives them some veteran leadership on their defense. I definitely felt like Seattle released him at least 3 or 4 years early because that’s how many years I think he can maintain his level of elite play. They pick up Weston Richburg who’s an instant starter in my opinion for the 49ers, and he will be integral in shoring up that offensive line. They make up losing Carlos Hyde by replacing him with Jerick McKinnon who I think is a way better fit for them than Hyde. Outside of that, there weren’t many other significant free agency pickups. For the record, Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall are still on the market at the time I’m writing this. I believe if the 49ers add either then their offseason grade improves immediately. The 49ers are a bit small at wide receiver, and they can use either one of these veterans.
San Francisco would have a very solid draft. Mike McGlinchey was selected with their first-round pick, and he’s a day one starter no question. McGlinchey was considered the best offensive tackle in this draft by far. I love this pick, and I can see him being a key part of the 49ers offense for years to come. They would also take Dante Pettis who I believe is somebody too many people slept on in this whole draft process. He may be able to work his way up through the wide receiver ranks and become a starter sometime this season. After that, the 49ers would focus on building their defense by selecting D.J. Reed (and picking up undrafted free agent Tarvarus McFadden who’s a steal), and Kentavius Street.
San Francisco had a solid draft, but everyone knows their success will depend on Jimmy Garoppolo. Their offseason moves this season won’t matter if Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t show that all the record-breaking money he received was worth it. If he shows that he is that guy for the Niners than this offseason will be graded much higher in the future looking back.
