The San Diego Padres sent shock waves through the baseball world by signing Manny Machado to the largest free agent contract in sports history early this week. Well, it appears they might not be done yet and could be topping themselves with another free agent; Bryce Harper.
hard as it is to believe, the padres have not ruled out signing bryce harper, too. ownership will meet tomorrow to see if they can make it 2 for 2 on this winter's mega stars. not seen as a likelihood, but apparently not out of the question, either.

According to Jon Heyman, the Padres ownership group will meet on Friday to determine whether or not they are going to pursue Harper. It does seem like a long shot, but they seem determined to bring out a competitive team that can win now in 2019.
Padres ownership wants to win, and will do, “whatever we can rationally do to make that happen.”
Padres only have $110M in payroll (bottom third of MLB). They have team control of a great lineup for (at least) the next 4 seasons.
Bryce Harper. It’s rational. Sign him.

If they were to sign Bryce Harper they will have to either match Manny Machado’s deal or exceed it. It’s a tone of money to commit but could have the Padres competing for a World Series immediately.
