Jimmy Butler Is Lacking Realistic Self-Awareness In Today’s NBA

I really tried to title this carefully. That’s why I went with the world ‘realistic.’ Jimmy Butler lacks REALISTIC self-awareness. Now, what does this mean?

Jimmy Butler has spent the last couple months making it publicly clear, that once again, he’s done with his team, coaches, and teammates – he requested to be traded. The reason I saw ‘again,’ is because this all happened before in Chicago when Butler didn’t get exactly what we wanted.

His head coach, Tom Thibodeau, coached him as a Chicago Bull, and now as a Minnesota Timberwolves all-star, didn’t trade him. Thibodeau controls both the coaching job and the job of President so he makes the majority of these decisions while Scott Layden is his advisor as a GM.

This made Butler mad and he decided to throw a fit (and dominate everyone) at practice, showing up for the first time this year, with only a week left until the start of the 2018-19 NBA season.

Things escalated really quickly:

‘By coincidence’ ESPN’s Rachel Nicohols was in Minnesota that day and got an exclusive interview with Butler, where he laid out all his emotions and thoughts:

Ok ok, time to break this down, and give the reason for my title.

Let’s start with the minimal things that I agree with Jimmy Butler on here.

First off, he’s right, the Wolves can’t win without him. There is proof of this, he was out 17 games this year due to injury, Karl Anthony-Towns and Andrew Wiggins didn’t hold the weight and they went 8-9. The Wolves went from contending for a 3-4 seed to having to play a 1 game playoff to get into the playoffs as the 8th seed.

Secondly, while we know exactly who is he talking about, and we all know KAT and Wiggins have zero heart and fight in them, I am glad he wasn’t naming names. Most mature thing about this interview.

Here’s where Jimmy Butler lacks realistic self-awareness:

Teams don’t trust him. It’s clear by the offers the Wolves have been receiving. BAD NBA FRANCHISES don’t want to give away mediocre pieces for Butler, because they don’t know if he is going to stay. Jimmy Butler has ruined two good (or good enough) situations in the NBA. Derrick Rose was getting too much love, Butler wasn’t, he wanted out. KAT is the focus for the Wolves long term, Butler is mad and wants out.

Butler doesn’t care as much about winning as he says. He said “winning is the number goal…” Don’t lie to us Jimmy, you said you are all about honesty. Butler requested originally to be traded to three teams:

Brooklyn Nets

New York Knicks

& Los Angeles Clippers

THREE TEAMS THAT MISSED THE POSTSEASON LAST YEAR & TWO NEW YORK TEAMS THAT HAVE BEEN A TRAGEDY FOR YEARS…

Also, are we sure Butler is a good teammate?

Seems like him and Dwayne Wade got along, but they only dealt with each other for a few months…

The NBA culture has made it easy for us via social media to see who everyone is good friends with, who else is Butler great friends with…. any teammates?

He also has destroyed both his situations in the NBA.

Last but not least: Jimmy Butler isn’t LeBron James. He isn’t Kevin Durant. He’s not Curry, Harden, Westbrook, Giannis, Anthony Davis, maybe not even Kyrie Irving.

The way he is acting and talking is as if he’s the best player in the NBA that needs the team to pick him over KAT. Butler might better right now, but yes, your team will favor the 22-year-old, who is their No. 1 pick a few years ago.

Jimmy Butler is great, his story from homeless as a kid to an NBA star is inspiring, but Butler is lacking realistic self-awareness.

Lack them up, and go play.

What do you think?
