Seton Hall Wins Reddit 2K National Title

Seton Hall Champs

The headline says it all, my Seton Hall Pirates took home the program’s first (should be second) ever NCAA Tournament Title tonight defeating BYU on the virtual hardwood 79-77. The Hall put together a magical tournament run featuring a high powered offense that failed to break 90 points just twice and it was the final two games of the Tournament.

Unlike what some have said before, it was not just the Myles Powell show. While he was great, guys like Quincy McKnight, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Jared Rhoden, and many others stepped up to play monster roles in the dream run for Kevin Willard’s team. Mamu and McKnight both had 20+ points in the Championship game while Powell struggled to find his touch.

The Pirates made the run and won it all despite losing starting center Romaro Gill early on in the tournament to an injury. But this team had a next man up mentality that helped them all the way into the Final. A game in which Seton Hall erased an 11-point second half deficit on the way to the Title and it all started with a beautiful Mamu up-and-under.

As the game wore on, BYU simply couldn’t find their shooting stroke. Neither team could really. And the Pirates took advantage and made the big plays when needed. Including this beautiful alley-oop from McKnight to Powell to extend the Hall’s lead to 5 late in the second half.

When it came down to it, the Pirates struggled at the free throw line to close it out but Toolson couldn’t hit the winner for BYU and it was Seton Hall who got the monkey from 1989’s bullshit game off their back.

Am I crazy for writing about a simulated version of the NCAA Tournament using a video game that is over a decade old? Probably. But man was this fun to watch. No, it wasn’t the highest quality play or graphics, but that’s not the point. The point is March. And we had that taken away this year. This at least gave us some sense of that back, with exciting games and camaraderie amongst other die hards who tuned in over the span over 6 weeks to watch this Tournament unfold. It absolutely helps that my Alma Mater took home the Title, but I still would have enjoyed it either way. Only Reddit could make this happen and in true Reddit form, they ended it with a bang.
